Age UK announced as Platinum Jubilee Shop Front Competition winner

Age UK in Wigston has been announced as the winner of the Oadby & Wigston Borough Council (OWBC) Platinum Jubilee Shop Front Competition.

Mayor of Oadby & Wigston, Councillor Rosemarie Adams, visited the shop today (Friday 17 June) to congratulate the team and presented Deputy Manager Diane Nagel and store volunteer Alan Christopher with their winner's trophies.

Councillor Adams also presented trophies to the runners-up, Gail Whitehead at Pet Care in Oadby and Andrew Lord at Lords Electrical in South Wigston.

The competition was launched in April to encourage local businesses to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee and saw fantastic participation with 22 entries from across South Wigston, Wigston and Oadby.

To mark the occasion OWBC also ran virtual reality Platinum Jubilee Beacon Trails across the three town centres, as well as hosting a beacon lighting ceremony at Brocks Hill Country Park, Oadby, and three Big Jubilee Lunch events across the borough for the local communities.

Councillor Adams said "Congratulations to Age UK as well as to Pet Care and Lords Electrical.

"There were some fantastic entries from throughout the borough and the competition was tough, but these displays really stood out for their creativity and effort.

"Thank you to all of the businesses who took part and helped our town centres to enter into the Jubilee spirit – you all looked excellent."

Diane Nagel of Age UK said "We're delighted to have been awarded first place amongst such strong competition.

"I would like to say a massive thank you to our volunteers for all of their efforts, especially Alan, Jessie, Gill, Margaret and Gill.

"We felt that it was important to play our part in decorating Wigston for the Jubilee and hopefully local residents enjoyed our display. All of the other shops also did a wonderful job with their windows, and between us we really managed to make the town look fantastic to celebrate the occasion."
