Wigston is the largest town in Oadby and Wigston Borough with some 32,000 residents and it marks the edge of the Leicester Urban Area as to the south the area turns to farmland. The town centre is focussed on Leicester Road and Bell Street, the latter providing a pedestrianised area, with a range of shops including a number of national retailers and smaller independents. Businesses in Wigston town centre are supported by the Wigston Business Group; to find out more please contact business@oadby-wigston.gov.uk

Wigston is home to a number of educational establishments, namely Wigston Academy, Wigston College and Birkett House Special School. The modern Wigston Pool and Fitness Centre sits on its western edge, and just outside the town centre is the Framework Knitters Museum, harking back to a key industry of a bygone age.

Wigston is also expanding with significant new housing coming forward at Welford Road. This leads to Kilby Bridge where the Grand Union Canal runs through the Borough, before turning to open countryside.
