A new community lottery has launched in Oadby & Wigston, giving the public an opportunity to support the local good causes that matter to them.

Oadby & Wigston Borough Council (OWBC) has facilitated the creation of the weekly lottery to help boost funding good causes receive. For each ticket sold, 60 per cent of the £1 per week ticket price goes to good causes in the borough, including 50 pence directly to the players' chosen cause.

Prizes can also be won, including the countrywide jackpot of £25,000 for matching all six numbers. Other prizes of up to £2,000 are also available for matching two, three, four or five numbers.

Pride of the Borough, Oadby & Wigston Lions and Elliott Hall for Youth & Community are among numerous good causes to have already signed up, and other Oadby & Wigston charities, community groups, voluntary organisations, sports clubs, scout/guides groups, PTAs, schools and similar can still sign up at any time.

The first Oadby & Wigston draw will take place on Saturday 5 August and will then be weekly thereafter. The very first draw is boosted by additional Love to Shop vouchers of £500 and £250 (x2) which can only be won by entrants in the borough.

To buy a ticket, visit www.oadbyandwigstoncommunitylottery.co.uk, choose the local good cause you wish to support and then pay for your ticket online. Good causes can also register through the same link.

Oadby & Wigston Borough Councillor, Bill Boulter, said: "Good causes and community groups in our borough provide an incredibly valuable service to local people and we're always looking for ways to support them.

"This includes offering funding and grants as often as possible – such as the financial support given to groups that set up warm hubs in the borough over winter to help those struggling with the cost of living.

"In addition to this though, we want to find new and innovative ways that will allow these good causes to raise further funds directly and this lottery provides that platform. Lotteries like this have proved hugely successful elsewhere in the country and we're sure local people will get behind it and support their chosen good cause."

Simon Lucas, Chairman at Pride of the Borough, one of the good causes already signed up, said: "We were pleased to join in and have the opportunity to raise additional funds to support the community work we do in Oadby & Wigston, while also giving supporters the chance of winning a cash prize. It's also great that early supporters will also get the chance of winning a shopping voucher in the first draw."
